May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor…

Hunger Games came out so long ago but I just got to watch it last week LOL! My friends went to watch it without me so I finally found someone else that didn’t watch it yet! I’ve read all three books so I wanted to see how they portrayed it in the movie. Usually people say you should just watch the movie first and then read the book because the movie will never live up to the book. I think in this case it might be good to read the book first!

There were some moments in the book I think they should’ve showed in the movie so the audience has a better grasp of what’s going on. For example, the reason why the hunger games was introduced. They kind of mentioned it at the start with the words in the introduction and also when they showed a clip to the tributes. It showed a clip talking about how everything was destroyed from war and then it was rebuilt to the way it was now. I don’t recall them talking about how there was a District 13 that tried to fight the Capitol. Of course, the Capitol won and D13 was destroyed. To prevent them other districts from ever doing this and also to show who’s in charge, Hunger Games was created.

I don’t know, there’s just some little details that I felt would’ve helped the movie out. Oh, by the way, who else was a bit disappointed in the fire costume.. LOL. I thought they were supposed to be engulfed in flames!?? And I also thought the killings would be more violent, but ah well haha! Movie wasn’t bad. But.. of course I thought the book was better LOL!

Anywho, I keep forgetting to take pictures of hauls and post them up so I think I might post up some stuff I got these past months. Also my friends and I just bought some clothes from S. Korea so I’ll post pictures of those stuff soon too! I’m excited haha. Oh, and I’ll make a post on some of the teas I got from Teavana too ::^^::. Keep checking back! I updated the most this month out of all the months since I’ve moved to this domain LOL. I feel very proud at the moment ::tear::.

GlossyBox Canada April 2012 Products Review

Aveeno // Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer
[[ This amazing moisturizing formula is clinically shown to improve the look of tone, texture, dullness, blotchiness, and brown spots – for naturally radiant skin. — 120ml/$22.99 ]]

I find that the formula is a bit like sunscreen (yes there’s SPF 15 in it) which makes it a tad harder to spread on the face. My mom actually sometimes buys an Aveeno moisturizer that comes in a jar which I occasionally use when winter got the best of me. I found that it was really rich – too rich, in fact, for daily wear. I was afraid this would be a same. I ended up liking it. It’s not overly rich but keeps my face hydrated without a layer of fat on top. I’m glad because my face is sensitive to overly rich moisturizers and I would get bumps on my face ::GAHH::. Great morning moisturizer. Oh, and it’s unscented for those that are sensitive to scents.

Likes: moisturizing without being overly rich, has SPF even though it could be higher for the face.
Dislikes: wish it was a bit more liquidy.

Elizabeth Grant // Skin Care Shower Gel
[[ Elizabeth Grant Skin Care Shower Gels are delightful fragrant cleansing gels, which foam as you clean. Capturing the true essence of grace, style and individuality in every person. — 240ml/$20.00 ]]

I received Madagascar Vanilla in my box. I’ve mentioned before that I enjoy using shower gels a lot more than soap bars. Mostly because I feel like soap bars strip too much of our natural oils and I find it a bit unsanitary. I noticed that people who received Golden Angel received their bottle with a pump while the rest of us has a normal screw top. I wish mine came with one since the ones on their site comes with a pump. Curious as to why the rest of ours don’t have a pump?? Ah well, since I can just pour it into a bottle that does.

Smelling the gel out of the bottle the scent seems quite strong which I like in bath products. I like smelling the scent while lathering on the skin during my shower and then having a light smell linger on the skin afterwards. Oddly enough, I don’t smell of the scent on my skin after my shower. Was a bit disappointed in that. I also noticed the formula is a bit on the liquidy side. It doesn’t provide much of a lather. With that said, I have read that foamy products have more harmful chemicals so I guess it’s a good thing. I just like my gels more soapy haha ::nervous::.

Likes: pleasant smell, doesn’t dry out my skin.
Dislikes: doesn’t leave much of a scent on body afterwards, not foamy enough for me.

Wella // Brilliance Conditioner (Fine to Normal)
[[ This lightweight Brilliance conditioner moisturizes coloured hair, leaving even fine hair full of vibrant shine and free-flowing movement. With diamond dust! — 250ml/$13.99 ]]

I was a bit surprised when I used this conditioner. It’s not as creamy as conditioners usually are. When I put it in my hair, it doesn’t feel as if I even applied any conditioner at all. As cool as it sounds that it contains diamond dust I don’t actually feel like that really helps with anything.

Likes: None.
Dislikes: Formula doesn’t help my hair at all. No difference compared to some drugstore brands.

Wella // Brilliance Treatment (Fine to Normal)
[[ Brilliance Treatment with triple-blend technology blends three lightweight polymers to instantly restore hair’s vibrancy, … and you guess it: With diamond dust! — 150ml/$13.99 ]]

The first time I didn’t put enough so there was no difference after using it. I don’t have thick hair so usually a small amount of product works for my hair. The second time I used it my hair was really soft after using the treatment. I don’t know if I really left it on for 3-5 minutes but either way, it works. Just be sure to coat enough on your hair! I’m really tempted to try out the Kao Essential Treatment to see how it compares to this one.

Likes: Hair feels really soft after using the treatment.
Dislikes: Doesn’t seem to be a long-term effect.

Marcelle // Xtension Plus Mascara
[[ NEW! Give your lashes extra length and curl with Marcelle XTension Plus Mascara. Define and separate lashes while minimizing clumps and create maximum lengthening potential for a lash-extension look without adding extensions. — 9ml/$12.50 ]]

The Xtension mascara comes with a plastic comb that has a bunch of bristles. Just looking at the brush I would assume it would do some crazy lengthening with my lashes. Using it, however, was a different story. I curled my lashes with my Shiseido lash curler and then applied this on. It definitely looked very natural because there wasn’t any clumping. It didn’t do any lengthening though! Any lengthening was minimal and the odd thing was I felt like it was either weighing my lashes down or undoing whatever curl my curler had done!

On a side note, I always use waterproof mascara because when I don’t I get panda eyes. This one isn’t waterproof so I wouldn’t keep it for myself anyway even if it worked wonders for my lashes ::>_o::. It’s very easy to take off with water though in case anyone is wondering.

Marcelle // BB Cream Beauty Balm
[[ NEW! Marcelle BB Cream: Try the 1st BB Cream formulated especially for Canadian women! Your 8-in-1 skin enhancer does it all for you, instantly! Offered in 2 shades with self-adjusting pigments to suit all ages and skin types. — 45ml/$22.95 ]]
I’ve read about how a lot of Western version of BB creams are not up to par with Asian BB creams so I was very curious about about them. I got the Light to Medium shade. Like the Asian ones it is able to adjust to our skin tone. I like how it wasn’t really thick. I’ve tried a lot of BB creams where it feels very thick on the face. I am very acne-prone so having such a thick layer on my face makes me break out in a couple of hours. Of course, having combination skin I oil up pretty quickly too and it just creates a mess. With that said, this one doesn’t seem to be any problem for my skin ::sparkle::.

It provides a bit of coverage for the face – not as little as some tinted moisturizers but enough for people that don’t need too much coverage. I think it lasts a fair amount of time too. I would need to blot after a couple of hours but I’m not at the oil slick phase though! I’m pretty impressed.

Likes: Not heavy – pretty lightweight, a fair amount of coverage, adjusts to skin tone, decent oil control.
Dislike: None.

LuxeBox May 2012

Subscribed to LuxeBox to see how it is between them and Glymm. Surprisingly, I found two boxes after I opened up the outer box. The black slide out box is the one that usually comes with the subscription. The white one is the extra one and it says “Bath and Body” on it.

I like how they have a sticker with our name on it. Like it’s packed just for us.

I thought there would be some nice soap or something in the white box haha! It was a razor with another Olay product. I’m a little confused about that because it’s the same one in the main box. LuxeBox has ‘MyScent’ which is a bag of perfume samples to let you test out different ones. I’m not sure if they’re doing this regularly.

Essie // Nail Polish (Camera)

[[ Today Essie Nail Polish has grown to be one of the industry’s most popular professional polish brands. Due to Essie’s long-lasting formula, Essie Nail Polish has been worn by many celebrities including Princess Kate Middleton on her wedding day. ]]
Full Size: 15ml/$8 || Received: 15ml/$8 (FULL SIZE)

I really wish they gave us a different colour LOL. I’m excited about another polish but I would never wear these neon looking colours ::tear::. I’ll probably just test it out to review and then give it away to family member.

Olay Regenerist // Wrinkle Revolution Complex

[[ See results in an instant. Watch as advanced micro-fillers and light-diffusing particles smooth the look of fine lines right before your eyes. This wrinkle treatment’s formula also hydrates to reduce the appearance of deep lines in just 14 days. ]]
Full Size: 15ml/$60 || Received: 14ml/$56

I’m actually pretty shocked how expensive it is when it’s a drugstore brand!! WOW!! And apparently we got 14ml out of the 15ml of a full size product. I did a light squeeze on the tube to see if it’s mostly just filled with air but product immediately came out ::GAH::!

EDIT// Ermmm I just checked around online and I don’t see anyone selling it for $60. Even when I add it into my cart on the Olay website to check, the original price is at $29.99 but marked down to $21.69???? Thought it was weird a drugstore brand was $60 for 15ml of product. Albeit it’s in American dollars, but it wouldn’t convert to $60 Canadian either haha.

Moroccanoil // Intense Hydrating Mask

[[ Hair in need of extra conditioning can benefit from this 5-minute revival treatment. Ideal for thick hair, the high-performance argan oil-rich formula deeply hydrates and conditions while dramatically improving hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability. ]]
Full Size: 250ml/$38 || Received: 75ml/$11.40

Great size to test out a product. I see Moroccanoil products a lot in other people’s LuxeBox so I hope it’s a great product!

Review:
Definitely makes my hair look better after use. It doesn’t look as dry and it looks straighter after I use the moroccanoil. I have straight hair, but it usually doesn’t dry stick straight unless I blew dry it. Is it long-lasting though? I’m not too sure about that yet. However, if you have some event you’re going to this will be a nice one to use in the shower before you need to head out later on. I don’t think I left it on for 5 minutes, but I still see a difference even when I had it on for less than that. It has a scent to it, but not one that’s overly strong or bad smelling. My hair wasn’t greasy or anything after the use, only softer!

Likes: Hair is noticeably softer, becomes more manageable after use, doesn’t make hair all greasy.
Dislikes: None.

Calvin Klein // Sheer Beauty

Full Size: 50ml/$78 || Received: 1.2ml/$1.87

Rihanna // Rebelle

[[ Sassy or sweet, Rebelle is a delightful enticement bringing to mind not only the warmth of the Caribbean sun, reflecting Barbados-born Rihanna’s roots, but also the exhilarating whirl of her present-day city life. ]]
Full Size: 50ml/$69 || Received: 0.58ml/$0.80

Prada // Candy

[[ Prada Candy caresses your senses with vanilla scented honey, benzoin and an explosion of caramel. Made with high-quality ingredients, the pure indulgence and enjoyment of Prada Candy lies in its excess. ]]
Full Size: 50ml/$96 || Received: 1.5ml/$2.88

Funny because my friend was just telling me about how Prada Candy smells like the CK Shock sample I got. I shall see haha! Rihanna’s label really cheaped out… not even 1ml for the sample LOL!! 0.58ml.. shake my head.

I will edit this post with my review of the items as I try them. Anyway, I’m interested to see what else they’d be sending in the future. I think if I got a better polish colour I’d be a lot happier LOL!

Chicken Teriyaki Meatballs

Chicken Teriyaki Meatballs
Ingredients

Meatballs
1 lb ground chicken
1/2 cup panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
1 large egg, beaten
1 green onion, minced
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 piece (1-inch long) ginger, peeled, shredded
1 tablespoon Japanese-style soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
8 quarter-size pieces fresh ginger, crushe

Teriyaki sauce
2/3 cup each: Japanese-style soy sauce, mirin
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
2 green onions, minced

Directions
  1. For the meatballs, mix chicken, panko, egg, green onion, cornstarch, shredded ginger, soy sauce, salt and pepper together in a large bowl. Cover; refrigerate at least 15 minutes or up to 4 hours.
  2. Heat a large saucepan of water and the sliced ginger to a boil over high heat. Reduce to a simmer.
  3. Using wet hands rinsed under cold water, shape the chicken mixture into 20 meatballs, about 1½ inches each. Carefully add to the saucepan. Simmer until cooked through, about 6 minutes.
  4. For the teriyaki sauce, heat the soy sauce, mirin, sugar and rice vinegar to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Boil until thickened and reduced to about 2/3 cup, 5 minutes.
  5. Remove balls from cooking liquid; drain. Serve over rice, drizzle with the sauce and garnished with green onions.

SOURCE

Got a lot of comments from friends when they saw a picture. They thought it looked really good LOL. It tasted good too so I shall be sharing the recipe I tried.

Like the last couple recipes I’ve been using, I’ve been using ground chicken. I’ve attempted making meatballs before but the last recipe I tried didn’t turn out good. Half of it was because of a mistake of mine – I didn’t have bread crumb. I thought I could substitute with panko.. I couldn’t haha ::nervous::! This time I searched for a recipe using panko instead. I don’t have bread lying around to make bread crumb ::swirl::.

I didn’t do the ginger part when I made this. Another thing I changed about the recipe was that I didn’t make my own teriyaki sauce so I am not really sure how the one in the recipe tastes. I used VH teriyaki sauce instead which tastes really good with this LOL.

I’m not really sure if this is what they were saying in the recipe but the way I cooked it was to put the meatballs into the pan. Put in around 1cm or so of water and let the meatballs steam. Let them get a bit crispy. Pour in the teriyaki sauce and let it thicken. I like making enough sauce so I can dip it in the sauce while eating it ::>_o::.
